Happy Leap Day!
So I have been wanting to organize some Strongman stuff into a little event, but have no clue what the interest of our membership would be, so I figured I would just do some open workouts first and teach a little (and ensure that is safe and no one kills each other)..
I checked out the Open WOD first to make sure I wouldn't slaughter myself for it on Friday, but once I saw "heavy high rep snatches" I realized that I was gonna bottom out on that WOD no matter what shape I was in, Good bye Regionals.. So whatever, let's lift some heavy shit.
I wanted to test 4 "events" and see how they went. I am still new to the SM programming, I am not a pro like Rob Orlando yet, but I have a good understanding of a lot of the movements. So I am using myself as the guinea pig by and large. Paul J and my buddy Eric joined me for the carnage.
Event 1 - Grip test (2 times max hold)
Using the baseball grip trainers, I hooked them up to a 1.5 kettlebell each and gripped them such that only my fingers were gripping, not my palm/hand.. I was able to hold for 40 seconds on the first time, and then for about 20-25 seconds on the second try.. This is SUPER hard.. holy crap.
Event 2 - Group Atlas stones over bar (about 48" height)..
Originally I was going to do this tabata style, but with 3 people I decided on the fly it was better do to "more rest, higher intensity efforts" so we did it like this:
Athlete 1 = 20 seconds AMRAP, 10 seconds of rest go by.
Athlete 2 = 20 " ".. 10 " " " .
Athlete 3 = same..
So it boiled down to 9 minutes, 6 total 20 second blasts of reps.. I was able to get the 115 stone over the bar 5 times each segment, which is solid for me..Good consistency.
Event 3- Tire flip in & outs
With a 3 minute running clock, we had to accumulate max reps of "flip the tire, jump in the center of it, jump back out of it, repeat".. I totally lost track of count.. probably got somewhere between 12-14 flips and jumps.. This was really taxing but fun.. I flipped the 450 tire and Paul and Eric partnered up on the 800 lb big boy.
Event 4- Max rep OH walking lunges 115#
This sucked. I was able to go from the white wall right about to the second speaker near the hurt locker, lost track of counting steps because I was trying to breathe and keep the bar stable.. really tough.. I am not good at these.. Need to work this in a little more bit by bit.
Fun workout.. If anyone wants to do more of this type of stuff, I would totally oblige and be willing to teach whenever.. Although I need to get a 60 lb stone to teach for ladies so there is a "barrier to entry" to break down.. The 95 is probably too heavy to teach most ladies on.. I would think.
