Last WOD of the Open competition.. What a fun 5 weeks this has been.. First off, I just want to say that I think CFHQ did a nice job with the programming this year.. It was pretty thorough and despite the strange movements and the fact that they couldn't do running, rowing, 1 rep maxes, or a lot of other things that are not "judgeable" within a given day, they still managed to program such that the fittest people in the world rose to the top of the leaderboards.. I also thought it was great that by and large the workouts were very inclusive such that people who never in a million years thought they could make the games, could still submit a score for each workout.. I would venture to say that the vast majority of people who have been doing CF long enough to care about participating in the Open can: do a burpee, snatch 75/45, do a box jump to 24"/20", do a wall ball as Rx'd once, and do a single thruster at 65/95... Therefore they could submit a score legally.. Pretty cool.. (That said, I hated programming for FCF during this Opens, it is very stressful. We tried to give a day of "buffer" between the release and when we actually did it to either make the Thursday workout a little more tame, or to just switch up movements, but it was such a headache..)
My reflections on this past 5 weeks for myself is basically what I always knew: I am happy with the performances I gave but I can always get better. I can get more strung together muscle-ups with some practice, I can get heavier Olympic lifts if I train them more regularly in my strength work, I can work on kipping more efficiently in both pull ups and T2B, and I can definitely improve my motor by pushing the envelope harder. I ended up coming in ~400th place in the Northeast which does not surprise me, there are a crapton of freak athletes out there who do not have desk jobs and can dedicate their every fiber of being to this stuff.. My goal I wrote down in January was to come in the top 25% of competitors for my division. I ended up in about 400th out of about 2100 legitimate competitors (there were many more, but only about 2100 submitted all 5 WOD scores, so I am counting that as the total).. That puts me right at about the 19th percentile, which allows me to cross off one of my 2012 goals.. BOOMSAUCE.. Next year maybe I will make the goal top 15% or something.. I like to be realistic while still finding measurable progress.. (for the record, I came in about 400th place last year as well, out of 850)..
I did 12.5 over at CWCF because I had been talking to some of their coaches who had been inviting me to swing by and WOD with them. I happily obliged.. I love visiting other places. Cool to see other blossoming communities.
My main goal was just "beat last year's version of myself" because I knew this workout did not play to any strengths of mine, so I just wanted to do better, whatever that meant, be it 1 rep or a bunch.. My plan heading in was to do the rounds of 3, 6, and 9 unbroken and then just divy it up as best I could once I got tired..
The unbroken rounds plan went well, but this workout got really shitty, really quickly.. I hit an absolute wall on the round of 15 pull ups.. I think I had like 2 minutes or so left when I got to this, and I wanted to break 100 (10 pull ups into the round of 18) and I just fell apart on the pullup bar.. Getting your chest up there requires such a hard kip that my grip struggled by the end.. I was able to get back to the barbell with a little time left and got 95 total reps.. This is a 15 rep improvement from when I got 80 last year in "11.6".. I am definitely happy with the progress, but I think I can do better if I were to hold on a little better in the final minute-ish.. Frustrating style workout.. Went from "no problem" to "holy crap" in like a matter of 6 reps somewhere in there..
